Workshops for Schools

Our teachers have designed five language challenges based on the original Creative Learning™ method. These activities not only teach but also ignite critical thinking in children and encourage them to explore languages.

5 Language Challenges

Below, you’ll find all five challenges with a detailed explanation of the rules and a focus on language development goals.

1. The Chinese Tower

Participants use wooden blocks featuring Chinese ideograms and images of landmarks from various countries. Their task is to stack the blocks into a tall tower and decode the Chinese character at the top. In some versions, participants can earn extra points by naming the landmarks

Language Development: This challenge enhances skills in recognizing cultural landmarks and understanding Chinese script. Participants learn to differentiate between handwritten and printed ideograms and gain insight into the Chinese writing system.

2. Flag Jenga

Participants disassemble a colorful tower by pulling out blocks labeled with French, Italian, and German words. The goal is to collect the right blocks to recreate the flags of three European countries, ensuring the correct words are represented.

Language Development: This activity builds vocabulary in three European languages, helps distinguish unique linguistic features, and hones analytical and sorting skills.

3. Three Animals

Participants receive cards with animals labeled in three different languages. Using memory techniques, they have 10 minutes to learn as many names as possible. They then complete a table where one of the three words for each animal is given.

Language Development: This challenge strengthens memory and comparative skills as participants learn animal names in various languages. A brief introduction to memory techniques helps them practice these methods effectively.

4. Language Charades

Participants draw prompts related to languages or culture and act them out for their group. Each prompt can be conveyed in one of three ways: describing the word, using hand gestures, or acting it out with their whole body.

Language Development: This activity enhances communication skills and creativity in expression. It highlights the power of non-verbal communication while teaching new words and cultural concepts.

5. The Language Family Tree

A linguistic tree! Each leaf represents a language, and the branches are labeled with language families. However, the leaves have fallen, and participants must correctly place them back on the tree.

Language Development: This challenge builds knowledge of language families and their relationships. Participants also learn about language classification and distinctive characteristics.
